About this tool
Writing a Markdown table by hand gets tedious as soon as you need to line up the pipes. This tool lets you fill in a grid like a spreadsheet, then outputs the table in GitHub Flavored Markdown, ready for a README, documentation or an issue. Each column can be aligned left, center or right, moved around or deleted.
To work on an existing table, paste Markdown, CSV separated by commas or semicolons, cells copied from Excel, LibreOffice or Google Sheets, or the HTML code of a table. Pipe characters inside cells are escaped for you. The output comes in three styles: aligned columns, simple or compact. The grid supports up to 500 rows and 50 columns.
How to use it
- Fill in the “Grid”; Tab moves to the next cell and Enter moves down, adding a row at the bottom when needed.
- Use “Add a row”, “Add a column” and the alignment buttons above each column.
- To start from an existing table, paste it into “Table to import” and click “Import into the grid”.
- Pick a “Formatting” style: “Aligned columns”, “Simple” or “Compact”.
- Click “Copy” or “Download .md” to get your table.
Frequently asked questions
Which formats can I import?
A Markdown table with its delimiter row, CSV using commas or semicolons, tab-separated text such as cells copied from a spreadsheet, and the HTML code of a table. The format is detected automatically, and column alignment is carried over from Markdown or HTML attributes.
How are pipe characters and line breaks handled?
A pipe inside a cell is written as \| so it doesn’t split the column, and a line break becomes a br tag, which GitHub renders as a new line. When importing, cells spanning several lines are joined into one.
Can my table have no header row?
GitHub Flavored Markdown requires a header row. If you uncheck “The first row is the header”, the tool adds an empty header above your data so the table stays valid.
Is my table uploaded to a server?
No. Editing, importing and generating the Markdown all happen in your browser with no network requests, and the .md file is created locally. The current table is kept in this browser’s local storage so you can pick it up later.
