About this tool
The JSON diff tool compares two documents by structure rather than line by line. Use it to check what changed between two API responses, two versions of a config file, or an export taken before and after a migration. Each difference is listed with its path, such as $.users[0].email, and labeled as added, removed or changed.
Object key order is never taken into account. Two options refine the comparison: ignore the order of array items, and treat 1 and 1.0 as equal. When a value changes type, for example a number that became a string, the before and after types are shown. Invalid JSON is reported with its line and column.
How to use it
- Paste the first document into "Original JSON" and the second into "Modified JSON", or click "Example".
- Under "Options", check "Ignore the order of array items" and "Treat 1 and 1.0 as equal" if needed.
- Read the summary and the list of "Differences"; "Swap" exchanges the two documents.
- Click "Copy report" to get the list as plain text.
Frequently asked questions
How is this different from a text diff?
A text diff flags every moved or re-indented line. Here both JSON documents are parsed and compared value by value, so reordering keys or changing the formatting produces no difference. Only real additions, removals and value changes show up.
How are arrays compared?
By default, item by item according to their position. With "Ignore the order of array items", each array is treated as a set where duplicates still count, so ["admin", "editor"] and ["editor", "admin"] are considered identical.
What does the copied report look like?
One line per difference, prefixed like a diff: "+" for an addition, "-" for a removal, "~" for a change, followed by the path and the value, or the old and new values. You can paste it straight into a ticket or a review.
Is my JSON sent anywhere?
No. Parsing and comparison run in JavaScript in your browser, with no network call. The documents you paste are not saved; only the two option checkboxes are remembered for your next visit.
