About this tool

The QR code reader decodes a code from an image you choose, drop or paste with Ctrl+V, or live through the device camera. It comes in handy for reading a QR code you received as a screenshot, checking where a printed code leads before following it, or getting the password of a Wi-Fi network shared by QR code on a computer without a camera.

The content is recognized and shown field by field: link with its domain, Wi-Fi network (SSID, encryption, password), vCard or MECARD contact, email, phone number, SMS or geographic location. For a link, the domain is displayed and you are asked to confirm before it opens; plain http links are flagged. The raw decoded text always stays visible and can be copied.

How to use it

  1. Click "Choose an image", drop the file onto the area, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V.
  2. Or click "Turn on the camera", allow access and point it at the QR code; the camera stops as soon as a code is read.
  3. Read the detected type and fields under "Content", then use the suggested action, such as "Open the link" or "View on OpenStreetMap".
  4. Click "Copy the content" to grab the decoded text, or "Clear" to read another code.

Frequently asked questions

Why is no QR code found in my image?

The code may be blurry, too small, cropped or low in contrast. Try a sharper or better framed image. For images, the tool also tries inverted codes (light on dark) and scales down very large images before scanning.

Why won't the camera start?

The browser requires a secure connection and your permission. If access is denied, no camera is found or another app is using it, a message tells you so. You can always use an image or a screenshot instead.

Does a link from a QR code open automatically?

No. The link is first displayed with its domain, including the Unicode form for an internationalized domain name. You have to click "Open the link" and then confirm to continue to the site, which gives you time to spot a suspicious address.

Is the image or video sent to a server?

No. Decoding happens in your browser, using the browser's built-in barcode detector when available, or else the jsQR library loaded into the page. Neither the image nor the camera stream is transmitted.
